CHAPTER 15

As I ride the Tube to Covent Garden, I roll our conversation around in my head. That snowball just keeps on growing. Of course, Stanley knows I’m lying. I can see it in his eyes. But the problem is I’m committed now. It’s happening. I can’t become un-fake engaged, not when I’ve agreed with James that I’ll give this six months and we’re moving in together tomorrow.

And if I’m entirely honest with myself, the benefits of this new arrangement of ours seem to far outweigh the negatives. And there are a few rather nice benefits. I check them off in my head.

Mum has stopped setting me up on dates with London’s single male population and she even seems happy with me, which makes a nice change.

I’m much more important in Mr. Tomlinson’s eyes, so much so, he’s happy for me to take two hours off in the middle of the day to go to a completely made-up lunch without even blinking one of his little pig-like eyes.

I’m moving into James’s place this weekend, and I get my own private bedroom and bathroom, which I strongly suspect will be light-years ahead of my current tiny bedroom and shared bathroom situation at Zara’s and my flat. Not that that’s hard. Our place is what real estate agents refer to as bijou, which translates to freaking small.

And the absolutely most important point of all, the one that has been the most wonderful surprise from this whole thing is Matt flirting with me. Flirting. With me. Really, this point all on its own is enough of a reason to be in this fake engagement.
